Barry Martin

Barry Barth Martin, age 71, passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021 from complications related to heart failure.
Barry was born in Los Angeles to Sally and John Martin. He attended Van Nuys High School and at age sixteen joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He later graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Political Science then earned his law degree from California Western School of Law.
In December 1969 Barry married his sweetheart Judith Layne in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Together they had eight children, raising them in Woodland Hills. He took great pride in his children; he enjoyed watching their moments of success and adventures.
Barry’s law practice in Southern California encompassed family, business and criminal law. He would occasionally jest, “99 percent of lawyers make the rest look bad.” In his professional and personal life, Barry always tried to help others. He was very generous to family and strangers alike.
Barry spread his time across a broad variety of hobbies and interests. He loved collecting stamps, coins, books, historical Mormon Church items, and more. He researched a vast amount of family history and assembled an extensive genealogy of over 100,000 ancestors. In recent years, he enjoyed spending time with his dear mother, Sally, going out to lunch, shopping and talking.
He has been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He held many callings including as a Young Men and Scouting Leader, a Seminary teacher, an emergency preparedness coordinator, a family history consultant, and as a worker in the Los Angeles Temple. He often reminisced upon backpacking and camping adventures with the young men.
Barry battled many health issues through his life, starting in the mid-1980’s when his knees were crushed in a car accident. In 2010 he suffered a severe heart attack which required a septuple bypass surgery, from which he never fully recovered. He was not one to complain of difficulties and simply moved forward in his own special way, usually with a 64-ounce Big Gulp of Diet Coke in his hand.
Barry is survived by Judy, his wife of 52 years; their children Jim (Rebecca), Steven, John, Corey (Chelsea), Jeffrey (Stephanie), David, Jennifer (Cody); eight grandchildren; his mother, Sally Rutter, and his brother Charles (Jeanne). He is preceded in death by son, Ryan.
Funeral services will be held on Friday September 3rd at 10:30 AM at the Woodland Hills Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 4501 Deseret Drive in Woodland Hills. A visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the same location.
Following the funeral service, interment will take place at Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth.
