Kathryn Barnes

Kathryn “Kathy” or “Kay” L. Barnes, 86, passed away Monday, January 10, 2022, at her home with her family by her side.
Born June 6, 1935, in Dodge Center, Minnesota, Kathy was the daughter of the late Louis and Bernice (Moe) Bjoraker. She was one of 9 children – 5 boys and 4 girls.
Kathy attended a country school through 7th grade and graduated from Dodge Center High School in 1953. After high school, Kathy worked a year as a secretary at Colonial Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota before attending Winona State Teacher’s College in Winona, Minnesota where she graduated with honors in 1958. Following her graduation, she taught for two years in Mondovi, Wisconsin. She then worked as a secretary in the Music Department at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington before returning to teaching at Moose Lake, Minnesota for three more years before meeting her husband in California.
On October 31, 1964, Kathy married Daniel “Dan” S. Barnes Jr. at Faith Lutheran Church in Dodge Center, Minnesota. Kathy and Dan had a daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” (Barnes) Zicker, and son, Daniel S. Barnes III.
Kathy was a housewife and stay-at-home mom while raising their children and returned to work after her children graduated high school. At that time, Kathy worked as an office manager for an electrical engineering firm, Athans Enterprises. She enjoyed working for the Athans’ family for about 15 years before retiring.
Kathy was a central figure for the California-based family hosting many gatherings for holidays and other occasions. Food was always a central highlight of these gatherings…and Kathy would wow her guests with her culinary skills whether trying out new recipes or making her ‘tried and true’ fare. Kathy was a devout Christian and was passionate about studying her Bible and the works of Martin Luther.
Besides her parents, Kathy was predeceased by her husband, Daniel S. Barnes, Jr.; her son, Daniel S. Barnes, III; her sister, Arlene (Bjoraker) Olson, and her brothers, Lyle, Lawrence “Larry”, and Marvin Bjoraker.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Cindy; her brother Wayne (and wife, Mary) Bjoraker (Owatonna, MN); her brother Roger (and wife, Fran) Bjoraker (Rapid City, SD); her sister Janice Phelps (Reseda, CA); her sister Linda (and husband, Harland ‘Tuz’) Nereson (Rochester, MN); her sisters-in-law, Barbara Barnes (Jamestown, CA) and Ona Bjoraker (Overland Park, Kansas); her daughter-in-law, Laura Barnes (Pomona, CA); her grandsons, Gregory Zicker (Woodland Hills, CA), Thomas Zicker (Camarillo Springs, CA), Daniel S. Barnes IV (Pomona, CA), and Joshua Barnes (Pomona, CA); as well as, several nieces, nephews, and cousins both in California, Minnesota, and yonder.
A funeral service will be held at noon on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, in the Chapel at Crawford Mortuary (8171 Tampa Ave, Northridge, California). Refreshments will follow the service until 2 p.m. when we depart for Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills (6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068) where Kathy will be interred following a graveside service at 3:30 p.m.
